A few months ago, Square Enix announced a remake for Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past (2000)which is coming out on February 5, 2026 (Yep! Two weeks from now) for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Early this January, they released a demo that you can play to start your adventure in Dragon Quest VII ReimaginedFollow the story of the Hero and his childhood friends as they discover the mysteries of their world and if there is more to the world than their small island kingdom. As you play, you discover the Shrine of Mysteries, where your party is sent back to the past, away from their home, to defeat evil, which sealed away entire lands. Akira Toriyama’s classic character designs are still there but modernized with a hand-crafted 3D art style, which fits perfectly with its beautifully designed environments and dungeons.

It is a beloved story and one of the best and most successful Dragon Quest games out there. Albeit, the original can take hundreds of hours to complete, while the 3DS remake takes between 75-150 hours to complete. Please note that Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is a remake of the PlayStation version and not the 3DS remake. Square Enix did mention that the game stays faithful to the original while streamlining the experience through optional side quests, stories, and minigames.

The battle system is improved and more dynamic than before, which includes changes such as “Moonlighting”—where each character in your party can now have two vocations at once, which makes experimenting and strategizing more fun with your party’s dynamic. You can also instakill enemies if they are weaker; just make sure to attack them from behind! Additionally, each vocation also has a Let Loose ability, a sort of adrenaline-fueled ability when your character gets worked up. Finally, a new Monster Master vocation that you can use if you want to summon monsters during battle.

Players can now play the demo, and their save will carry over once they buy the game. They can also preorder the full game on all platforms, wherein they will receive an Early Bird Bonus, which gives a unique costume for the Hero and three seeds of Proficiency to give players a head start. Players who buy the digital version of the game will get an in-game Slime Shield, which is unique to each platform. Moreover, if you prefer to play it 2 days earlier, then the Digital Deluxe Edition can cover that itch, which also provides players a unique costume for playable character Ruff, and three paid DLC packs will be available at launch.

DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined will be available for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store on Windows on Feb. 5, 2026, at a suggested retail price of $59.99.
